HAURAKI PLAINS DRAINS
MUCH DAMAGE REPORTED
(Hy Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) THAMES, Saturday. The Hauraki Plains United Drainage Board met yesterday, the chairman, Mr. H. H. Hicks, presiding. The foreman, Mr. W. A. Herkt, reported that much damage was bcin" done to drains by cattle and pigs and that many fences along the drains were in a shocking condition. He considered that the board would have to strike a | fencing rate and take over all the fencing or else prosecute the offenders Some settlers, he added, were also damaging drains by the method .they used for letting surplus water away. It was decided to prosecute offenders allowing drains to be damaged. The chairman reported that he had interviewed the Ministers of Public Works and Employment in Wellington regarding slips on the Wharepoa TJoad, with the object of securing a subsidy for the clearing work and also in connection with the proposal to raise finance for stopbanking near Ngatea. It was decided to follow up the interviews with further information from the board.
