WINTER BOWLING.

SATURDAY'S FUNCTIONS. MATCHES AND SOCIAL GAMES. CLUB OPENINGS THIS WEEK. (By TRUNDLER.) Glorious weather on Saturday suited bowls admirably, besides confirming the impression that daylight saving on the following morning would continue the much more pleasant weather than Auckland endured during the three winter months. By far the largest gathering of the day fully occupied the four greens of the Auckland Bowling Club, and constituted the largest company of bowlers who have assembled during the whole of the winter season. This was rather remarkable, considering the strong counter-attractions, for it was literally true that they had football, to right of them, football to left of them, whose accompanying cheers volleyed and thundered, as Tennyson would say. However, the annual business match 'between Queen Street and Karangahape lload bus become quite an institution, and ample nominations to fill the available ground were easily obtained. The only unfortunate feature was that again several nominated and then stayed away without giving any notice to the organisers. Nobody minds if intending players afterwards find that they cannot attend, provided they send word, but it is not a very courteous gesture to the rest of the 17C players to ignore their obligation, for their failure entailed recasting the rinks to such an extent that the games could not be started till nearly half-past two. Intending players should bear in mind this aspect of their obligation in future, for there are several similar functions still to bo carried out. Dr. Neil MeDougall, president of the club, welcomed the visitors, especially mentioning the presence of three of the six Auckland past-presidents of the New Zealand Bjwling Association, Messrs. M. M. McCallum, James Pascoe and liayn.ond Sheath. At the tea adjournment he took the opportunity to commend the organisers on arranging such a gathering, for he thought that there might be too many tournaments, but there could not be too many social functions of that nature, where the players assembled with no motive beyond the pleasure of meeting their fellows for an enjoyable afternoon. Mr. T. R. George responded on behalf of the Queen Street organisers and players, I and Mr. Frank Furnell for Karangahape Koad. The former won by 12' A; games to !)'/£•, whereas last year they won by 16 to 6, and the previous year by 14 to 8, but Karangahape Koad are sure to come up 6iniling again next year. Two similar functions are arranged, for next Saturday, the Oddfellows at Epsom, and the Grammar Old Boys at Auckland. The latter will again be accompanied by former students of other colleges, an addition this year being former students at Auckland University College. One of these will be Alex. Matthews, the Auckland champion of champions three years ago. Everybody knows him as a bowler and a yachtsman, but probably most people have quite forgotten that in 1912 he represented Auckland University Collego in Rugby, the most notable occasion probably being against Victoria Uniyersity College (Wellington), so it is quite time that he should represent the college at bowls also. These gatherings will clash with five club openings for the summer season—Waiuku, Pukekohe, I'apatoetoe, Waitemata and Auckland Transport—but this could not bo avoided. Similarly a week later the Thames Okl Boys will have their annual gathering at Epsom, and this will also clash with several club openings. The Rawhiti rink are making a name I for themselves by their success in the | Edwin Stars. After taking the trophies t from a strong Remuera rink they have • resisted an attack from three other strong clubs, last Saturday's match leaving them such a margin that the visitors retired gracefully at tho nineteenth head: E. E. Leaning, C. M. Culpin, A. Macphrson, W. ,Chiplin (Rawhiti) holders 30, v. E. N. Davies, H. K. Martinson, A. Blackie, J. R. Lundon (Devonport), challengers, 10. ] Blackie was rather unlucky with some of his good shots, but what really settled the issue was the fact that the whole ; Rawhiti team played so steadily that Lundon rarely had a position where he could achieve his usual success with his kell-known up-shots. Tho scores for the 19 heads fairly well indicated the play, • the Rawhiti total being given first in each i case: 4—o, 4—4, 4—5, 5—5, 7—5, 10—5, 13—5, 13—7, 13—10, 16- 10, 17—10, 20—10, 20—12, 24—12, 24—14, 24—16, 26—16, 27—16, 30—16. Tho name of tho next challenger , will bo included in the list of fixtures on i Thursday. 1 Grey Lynn stood up to a strong rink at Carlton for tho Donison Pins, after capturing them from Takapuna the previous week. At one stage they were 8 up, but 1 tho challengers played an aggressive game, and nearly won, the final score being: T. Mayson, W. McMurehy, R. C. Caddy, E. E. Buckley (Grey Lynn), holders, 19, v. 1 G. Kent, W. Brownlcc, R. Higgott, J. Hodd (Carlton), challengers, 17. As tho C Grey Lynn greens are closed for renovation the holders will again defend their - trophies at Carlton next Saturday. As tho next few challengers are engaged for that day the challenge will be taken up by a rink arranged by I. H. McNair h (West End), followed by F. Coburn (Ponsonby).

Another fine game in the Diggers' Badges found Carlton the winners by one point: A. Cutler, J. Matchett, M. J. Gordon, F. Pitt (Carlton), challengers, 19, v. M. Griffin, W. C. Whyte, G. "E. Wood, H. L. Joll (Ellerslie), holders, 18. They tied on the twentieth head and Ellerslie were lying two shots on the last, but Pitt drove them both out, to bring the trophies back to where they originated. Next Saturday's challenger is R. T. Sheppard (Hillsboro').

The remaining rounds in the two-day rink tournament at Balmoral found the section winners in IT. R. Goldsmith (Balmoral) and R. N. Melville (Devonport), who will meet in the final next Saturday. There were several ties in a similar tournament at Mount Eden, and it is hoped that these and the final will also be cleared up next Saturday. Apart from the record gathering at the Auckland greens last Saturday, the feature of the day was the pleasant surprise the visitors received on viewing the greens themselves. Those who saw them last March must have decided that it would be quite impossible for them to recover eo quickly from the severe gruelling of the dry summer, but on Saturday the sward was almost perfect, and the greenkeeper must be complimented on the change effected. In one way they were deceptive, for the amount of thick grass conveyed the impression that they were heavy, whereas brilliant sunshine made them very keen. The greenkeeper very wisely left plenty of grass, knowing the risk of close cropping in the early part of the season, so the greens would probably get more good than harm from the day's play. Visitors to other greens for the openings during the nekt few weeks will be curious to see if they have equally improved after being renovated during the winter.

WESTERN SUBURBS CHAMPIONS,

Iho remaining rounds in the champion of rliamplons of the Western Suburbs Association were played on Saturday. There were four servlvors from the first two rounds, H. Cash, the champion of Hallyburton Johnstone, having been eliminated. In the third round H. Wright (Henderson) beat B Meese (New Lynn) two-lifers, and A. Audley (Glen Eden) eliminated A. I J ringle (Avondale) one-lifers. In the fourth round Audley gave Wright his first loss, Meese getting the bye. In the fifth Audley got the bye, and Meese eliminated Wright. The final was an exceptionally good game, for Meese and Audley tied on the twentieth head, at 15 all. On the last head Audley had two bowls within six Inches of the white. Meese being close behind the jack. The latter drove and picked out one opposing wood and one of his own, leaving Audley the winner for the second year in succession. Any who care to follow the play on a chart will observe that according to the automatic draw the bye should not hare gone to Meese in the fourth round, as there were three left, of whom Wright and Meese had each received a bye three weeks ago, so It should have gone to Audley. As It happened, however, it did not matter, for Audley won in the end, in the best game of the tournament, carefully watched by a good bank of spectators. Mr. G. P. C. Hosking (Glen Eden), president of the association, Mr. K Sutherland (Avondale), vice-president, and Mr. W. V. Kelsall (Avondale), secretary, wish to express their obligation to the Hallyburton Johnstone Club for the use of their green, as it had been Impossible to get off the tournament during the summer, and all the others were closed for the winter. Thanks are also due to Messrs. J. Clark and R. Bong for their services as umpires on both days.
