FIRE-FIGHTERS.

BIG LONDON BLAZE.

Burning Continuously for Forty-one Hours.

EXPLOSION HASTENS END

British Official Wireless.

(Received 1 p.m.)

RUGBY, September 27,

After 41 hours of continuous work by the forces of London fire brigades drawn from all parts of the metropolis, confidence was expressed this morning that all fears that the great riverside fire on the Colonial wharf, Wapping, would spread to adjoining warehouses had now been set at rest.

The fire is not yet entirely subdued and another shattering explosion, caused by tho ignition of gases, burst open ail iron door this morning and tongues of flame leapt out, further endangering the firemen, who throughout have been exposed to great risk. Removal of the door, however, permitted jets of water to be played on the scat of the fire which is now regarded as being under complete control.

The fire has resulted in heavy losses. It is estimated that about 2000 tons of rubber.. have been destroyed and 1000 tons damaged, while large sums are involved in the loss of copper and spelter stored in the premises.

The district is laden with soot, and schools and tenements are uninhabitable.

STILL BURNING. i FIRE AT SYDNEY WOOL STORE. (Received 11 a.m.) SYDNEY, this day. The fire at the wool store of GoldsbrOugh, Mort, which started on Wednesday morning, is still burning. Twenty firemen are constantly on duty and continue pouring on water. During the night a strong wind caused the flames to shoot up again. Residents in suburbs as far as 10 miles from Pyrmont report that they can smell the burning wool. Charred fragments of wool which have apparently been carried into the upper atmosphere with smoke are still descending.
