RELIEF WORK.
May I state for the benefit of your correspondent "Anxious" that the Mount Roskill relief workers are not the only workers being imposed, on. The New Lynn Borough Council ' has taken advantage of men on No. 5 scheme by kerbing footpaths and doing quarry work, also the laying down of crossings to private motor garages. We consider that this work was never sanctioned by the Unemployment Board, for has it not stated that any local body that abused No. 5 scheme would not be allowed to use it and the scheme would be closed down? The New Lynn Borough Council has also had a successful year. Why not pass some of it on to the relief workers hv way of a subsidy? ANXIOUS NO. 2. [The Mayor of New Lynn, in reply to this letter, states that all the work carried out has been in the nature of reconstruction, and the permanent staff lias at no time been decreased, but increases liave been made from > time to time in accordance with the finances of the borough.—Ed.] '
