HAWERA HORSES.

ELLERSLIE ENTRANTS.

NOTIUM NOT COMING.

LOWENBERG AND FERSEN.

The two-year-old Notium has definitely improved with his racing at Avondale, but will not be taken to Ellerslie for the Welcome Stakes. Notium's next outing will be in the Wellesley Stakes at Trentham.

The Trentham and Waverley Labour Day meetings will be well patronised by Hawera stables, as all the local trainers will have horses ready by that time. Soloist injured his head so severely when he crashed at Avondale that he will require a spell, and it is doubtful if he will be taken to the spring meeting at Auckland.

All going well with him, Bantry's trip to Ellerslie has been definitely, decided on. R. Brough has bee;i working him the reverse way round regularly, and on Thursday he went a good six furlongs. Lowenberg and 'Fersen have been doing plenty of steady work the reverse way round, and a decision as to the Auckland trip will be determined in a day or two. Present intentions are for Gay Chief to make his first appearance in a race at Ellerslie in the Welcome Stakes, and the brother to Gay Seton is being sent along seriously with that object in view.

The Tea Tray—Fleeting mare Silver Wings, who showed a lot of speed as a two-year-old, but was a disappointment last season, has wintered exceptionally well, and developed into a good looking four-year-old. W. Grindlay has started working her' regularly, but it will be Christmas before she is required to race. Given her first fast work for some time, St. Clara, who has been affected with an enlarged joint, displayed signs of soreness after cooling off that were not reassuring.

Promising Two-year-olds. A feature of the training operations at Hawera during the week-end was the work of the two-year-olds under F. Fryer's care, wllo were sprinted together. The youngsters were Mr. Somerton's colt Ned Cuttle, by Captain Bunsby—Merry Twinkle, Mr. J. Kiley's colt International, by Captain Bunsby—Vivo, and Fryer's colt by Martarma from Lady Colossus. The try-out was a very satisfactory one, the youngsters finishing evenly over the quarter mile in 255. These young ones have done a lot of steady exercise and road work, and are a tractable trio. Ned Cuttle is the most 'forward, and moves very nicely. His trainer did not intend racing him until Christmas . time, but he may be given a run on the second day of the Auckland spring meeting. International is a tall, rangy individual, a big strider, but showing an action that will probably grow better as he gains strength. International promises to grow into a commanding looking three-year-old, and may not be seen at his best until then. Fryer's Martarma representative has done remarkably well, and has furnished into a nice colt, and his owner-trainer has a high opinion of liie prospects. Mrs. W. D. Graham's colt Brilliancy, by Excitement—Glittering, is making good progress, and made a good showing when sprinting alongside Gay Chief, the pair covering the two furlongs in 255. J. Brown is working the Nigger Minstrel—Slackline filly Shemsch regularly, but she has not been stretched out as yet. Shemsch is well grown,: and ono of the best looking youngsters on the track.

Mr. W. D. Williams' hunter Just Off had made great improvement since racing at New Plymouth, and such a capable jumper should do well over the Ellerslie country,, where he..wi,lLhe given a tryout at the forthcoming Auckland Club's meeting. J. TVyer has another addition to his already big string in the aged gelding MehaL : -l?y, r Gynic- ; from d&nv who is to be prepared for jumping'events. Another newcomer to Hawera is a five-year-old bay mare by Acre from Red Gold, the property of a Hunterville sportsman. This mare is,(to race as Our Selection, and has gone into M. Conway's stable.
