HOSTESS AFTERNOON.

The ladies of the Birkenhead Methodist Church held a successful hostess afternoon on Thursday in aid of circuit funds. The hall was attractively decorated and the stage was transformed into a bower of flowers. Mrs. Gatman, wife of the Rev. W. Gatman, extended a welcome to about 250 guests, a number of whom were from the city. An enjoyable programme was contributed by the following:—Mrs. Letcher, pianoforte solos; Mrs. Edmonds, violin solos; Miss Wrigley, elocutionary items; and Mr. Nonvell, vocal solos. A very pleasing feature was the presentation of bouquets to the lady artists by Mrs. Todd, | senior member of the church. A spo6ial bouquet was presented by the president to Mrs. Maxwell, who is leaving Auckland shortly to reside in Wellington. The convenors of the function were Mrs. Gatman (president), Mrs. Hadwick (secretary), 'and Mesdames Wilson, Hayman, Wright, Hall, Ilewson and Hubball, assisted by other ladies of the church. As a result of the effort, the | circuit funds will benefit by over £16. |
