RATE INCREASED.

DECLINE IN REVENUE. ROTORUA BOROUGH COUNCIL. (By Telegraph.-—Own Correspondent.) ROTORUA, this day. The Rotorua Borough Council, at a special meeting last night, struck its rates for the present financial year. They show a 5 per cent increase in the consolidated rate. The Mayor, Mr. T. Jackson, said this increase was necessary owing to the revenue requirements and the decrease in the council's income. He referred to a pamphlet, which he saiif had been distributed by the Ratepayers' Association, condemning the council's administration and alleging that the rate increase was not necessary and would be followed by further increases if the mayor's loan proposals were carried. Mr. Jackson said the pamphlet contained a number of inaccuracies and pointed out that the ratepayers would have an opportunity of expressing their opinion on the loan proposals when they went to the poll. The chairman of the Finance Committee, Mr. O. H. Coleman, in. supporting the Mayor's remark?, reviewed the council's finances during the past five years and pointed out that despite the fact that the council had suffered a reduction in income of £7000, its cash assets had increased by £3000. The reduction in income was due to the • r > per cent rate reductions in two succeeding years and to the loss of Government bnth fees as « result of the recommendation of the Economy Commission
