DOCTOR OF LAWS.

AUCKLANDER HONOURED. SENATE CONFERS DEGREE. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. The degree of doctor of laws was conferred on Dr. Roy Greville McElroy, of Auckland by the executive committee of the New Zealand University Senate. Dr. McElroy, who is a partner in the firm of Lovegrove, George and McElroy, received his sec6ndary education at Thames High School and Auckland Grammar School, and graduated at Auckland University College in 1928 with the degree of bachelor of laws. The following year he gained the master of laws degree with honours and was awarded the senior scholarship in contract and torts. In 1932 Dr. McElroy obtained the New Zealand University post-graduate travelling scholarship in law and proceeded to' Cambridge University, where after two years' research he received the degree of doctor of philosophy in law. This award was made in respect of a thesis on the impossibility of performance of contract, a branch of the law of contract which developed rapidly during the Great War. The thesis was described by noted English legal authorities as an important contribution of real value to the existing knowledge of a very difficult aspect of the law. The award by the Senate is further recognition of it.
