COUNCIL'S APPLICATION. KOTORUA LOAN PROPOSALS. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) KOTORUA, this day. A letter which has aroused considerable controversy in the town was discussed in committee by the Rotorua Borough Council last night. The council decided to proceed with the application for a license to show films in the proposed municipal theatre, which is the main object of the £25,000 loan proposal brought forward recently by the Mayor, Mr. T. Jackson. Before reaching this decision the council met a deputation from local theatre interests, but the outcome of this discussion was not reported in open meeting. The Mayor has been a persistent protagonist of the scheme to erect municipal buildings, the main feature of which would be a concrete chamber and town hall in which, Mr. Jackson suggests, pictures could be shown when it was not required for public functions. When Mr. Jackson first brought the proposal forward the section relating to the erection of the municipal buildings was deleted by the council. The remainder, which deals with a Joan of £18,000 for roading and street* improvements, etc., was carried, and will be submitted to the Government Loans Board at its next meeting. Undeterred, Mr. Jackson subsequently lodged an application for a theatre license when he was on the eve of departing for a holiday trip to Suva. The council was not informed of the \ application at the time, but at a subsequent meeting the Mayor's action was approved, although no decision was reached whether the council proposed to follow it up. The requisite time having lapsed, Mr. Jackson has now given notice of motion to revive his municipal buildings and town liall proposal, and this will be discussed at the next general meeting of the council.
