SOCIETY OP MUSICIANS.

SCHUBERT-SCHUMANN NIGHT. A programme of compositions by Schubert and Schumann wan presented in the Lewis Eady Hall yesterday afternoon by the Auckland Society of Musicians before a fair-eized audience. The conceit opened with the melodious Schubert Trio in B Flat, played by Mr. Haydn Murray, violin, Mies Lalla Hcmue, cello, and Miss Dora Judeon, piano. The ensemble throughout was excellent, and, except for an occasional lapse in intonation, a very fair performance resulted, the bent played movement being, perhaps, the lovely Andante un poco mosso. Schumann's bright and joyous Quintet in E Flat was also given, the players in this being: Mr. Haydn Murray (first violin), Mr. Carl Whitmore (second violin), Mies Lois Walls (viola), Mies Lalla Hemus (cello), and Mr. Owen Jeneeu (piano). Notwithstanding that this performance had ite weak moments, like the Schubert Trio, it was much enjoyed by the members of the audience, who, with more enthusiasm than discretion, expressed their appreciation by applauding between the movements.

A piano solo in the form of the Allegro from Schumann's "Faschingechwank," wae played by Mr. Owen Jensen, who gave an interesting performance, in which the only blemish wae a tendency to blur in the fortissimo passages. Three groups and a bracket of songs by the two composers were also presented. MLss Winifred Hill eang Schubert's "Hark, Hark, the Lark" and "The Trout," also Schumann's ''The Almond Tree," all of which were neatly vocalised. Two of Schubert's lieder, "The Wraith." and "The Wanderer," were given a thoughtful interpretation by Mr. J. T. Gibfion, who lias a base-baritone voice of excellent quality, but with more than a suspicion of "wobble." Miss Amy Hansard sang three lieders by Schubert, "Peace," "The Wanderer's Night Sons," and ''Whither?" all of which were given with her ueual regard for artistic expression. Three Schumann iieder, "Love of Freedom," "Ah, Sweet Aβ Any Flower," and "Devotion," were sung by Mr. Arthur Thompson, with taste and sincerity.. The accompaniments were played by Miss Gladys Searell. Mr. Leo Whittaker and Mr. Owen Jensen.
