THAMES ORPHANS' CLUB.
SUCCESSFUL FIRST MEETING. (From Our Own Correspondent.) THAMES, this day. Highly successful' was tho initial meeting of the Thames Orphans' Club, which was held on Saturday evening in "the Masonic Hall. Ovc-r 200 were present, including a largo contingent from tho Paeroa Club and a number of Auckland members. Cordial receptions were accorded Mr. A. M. Samuel, M.P. for Thames, and Mr. P. Williams, permanent president of tho Paeroa Club, the latter being unanimously appointed chairman for the evening. An excellent programme was presented, including a number of items by the Paeroa Or ihestra under the baton of Captain W. Innis, card and other tricks by "Cardo," humorous items by Mr. A. MrElw.iin, a violin duet by Messrs. G. Kerby and H. Dicksoii. and so7igs by Messrs. R. Jutson, W. Urwin, M. Hoskin and W. Forrest. During the evening the chairman, on behalf of the Auckland Orphans' Club, presented Mr. C. J. Garland with a medallion for the chairman's collar, and, on behalf of members of the Paeroa Club, a silvermounted Ravel. Mr. Garland said the new club would start with 130 members, and would commence regular meetings early next year. He appealeuJfcto members to give the new club their whole-hearted support, and said he saw no reason why the Thames Club should not become one of the strongest in the Dominion.
