LEAGUE FOOTBALL.
AUCKLAND REP. TEAM.
AUSTRALIA ON SATURDAY.
FOWBRJFUXi SIDE SEIJECTEIX
The Auckland selectors, Messrs. E. K. Asher, W. Mincham and H. Avery, to-day announced the Auckland team to meet the Kangaroos in the opening match, of their tour at Carlaw Park on Saturday. The side is as follows:—
Full-back.—N. Campbell (Marist). Three-quarters.—E. T. Mincham and A. E. Cooke (Richmond), l>. Brown (City Rovers). Five-eighths.—S. Prentice (Richmond), A. Kay (Ponsonby). Half-back.—R. Powell (Richmond). Forwards.—Front row: W. Telford (Richmond), S. Quirke (Newton), L. Hutt (Ponsonby). Second row: C. Satherley (Richmond), J. Laird (Marist). Breakaway: H. Tetley (Richmond).
Reserves.—D. Herring (Mount Albert), forward; B. Riley (Ponsonby), C. Hall (Devonport), backs.
The players are to meet at Carlaw Park to-morrow evening at 7.30 for training. The team chosen to play in Saturday's important fixture will be generally considered a very sound one. With Campbell, the Marist and Auckland international, behind the Mincham-Cooke-Brown threequarter line, served inside by Prentice and Kay, the rearguard has striking attacking power and will be found solid on defence. Hassan's knee apparently troubled him in the south, and Powell takes his place at half-back. A fine pack has been sorted out of the many players eligible, and it will be pleasing to Auckland patrons who witnessed the Roqpe Rooster final and champion of champions match to note that the Newton hooker has received the recognition his fine all-round play 'has deserved. The Richmond breakaway Tetley confirmed his worth on the southern tour. The same remark applies to the three players picked as emergencies. The team for the field ehould perform with distinction against Australia.
