CONCRETE PATHS.

SCHEME FOR NEWMARKET.

EXPENDITURE OF £0500,

A comprehensive scheme for the laying down of the footpaths in the borough in concrete at a cost of £6500 was

adopted at a meeting of the Newmarket Borough Council last evening. Practically the whole of the streets are to be attended to in this way, the exceptions being those streets in which the grades are of such a nature as to make concreting inadvisable.

The echeme is divided into three sections, providing for 4890 square yards of concrete paving in the business area of Broadway and Khyber Pass, 10,830 equaro yards of paving in residential streets, and 11,670 square yards of paving in other streets where the width of the paving will bo limited to 9ft only. The ratepayers have already approved of the scheme, and the required loan hac been authorised.

Where borough services—water, gas and power—are under the footvays tho pavements will be laid in slabs, so that when repairs or other works are necessary in connection with these services the footways may be lifted and replaced without damage. Where there is an absence of services, however, the concrete will be laid intact. The approximate area of concrete to be laid down is 27,390 square yards, and of this tho area to be covered by slabs will be 17,230 square yards.

The council adopted a report by tho borough foreman, Mr. J. W. McCormack, setting out details of the scheme, and agreed on the recommendation of tho general purposes committee to leave the matter of the selection of the men required for the work to tho foreman.
