LOCAL BODIES.

NEW LYNN BOROUGH COUNCIL

A meeting of the New Lynn Borough Council was held last evening. The Mayor, Mr. Geo. Lawson, presided, other members present being Messrs. A. J. Jeffrey, Geo. Severne, A. Woolley, S. Hards, I , '. Carter and C. Drury.

Telephone Charges.—The PostmasterGeneral wrote stating that upon investigation it had been found that on account of the condition of certain long-distanoe party lines and the incidence of the "loaded" rate in connection therewith, a number of subscribers on such lines had not received the full benefit of the concession which it was intended should be applied. This was being rectified and amended accounts issued. He thanked the council for bringing the matter under his notice.

Proposed Morningside Tunnel. —A letter from the Northern Suburban Railway and Highways League stated that it was again opportune to once again press forward the claims for the construction of the proposed Morningside tunnel. The tunnel scheme was approved and passed by Parliament in 1924, and a definite promise made that the work would be commenced in the year 1929. The council was asked to appoint two delegates to attend a meeting to be held on Monday, September 30. The Mayor and Mr. Severne were appointed. _ Boundary Culvert. — The Waitemata County Council submitted three tenders for the reconstruction of a boundary culvert on Hutchinson Avenue, which was recently destroyed by flood. The lowest tender was that of Messrs. Bray and Company, £114 5/, and recommeuded r ior acceptance by the County Council. The engineer's estimate was £107 10/. The Borough Council approved. Heavy Traffic Fees. —A communication was received from the Auckland, City Council relative to the distribution of heavy traffic fees. As the distributing authority, the council had been approached with the suggestion that the fees be distributed among local bodies on the same basis as last year. The City Council advised that it was strongly opposed to the present method and would continue to press tor a revision of the regulation dealing with the matter. However, in view of the tact that this latter matter was apparently under consideration and any alterations would not affect this year's distribution, the Auckland Council would agree to a distribution on the same basis as last year. The consent of the New Lynn Council was sought. It was agreed _to accept payment on last year's basin. The borough foreman submitted a lengthy report on the present basis and made recommendations with a view to obtaining a better formula, which included the taking of a census of traffic in every street and road in New Zealand by each local authority—with the help of the Main Highways Board —for a period of one week in summer and winter, the average tonmileage for a period of three years to be calculated from these tallies. Dudley Avenue.—The residents of this street petitioned the council for an improvement in the road and footpath facilities. Referred to the works committee with power to act.
