RATING INCREASE.

TAKAPUNA FINANCE.

THE ANNUAL ESTIMATES.

REVALUATIONS THE CAUSE,

The annual estimates were presented at last night's meeting of the Takapuna Borough Council by the town clerk, Mr. H. J. Bowden, and after discussion were adopted, the Mayor, Mr. J. Guiniven, giving notice of his intention to move that the rate for 1935-30 be 1/ in the pound. The principal reason for the increase in the rates from 8d t.o 1/ in the £1 was that the valuations throughout the borough were recently reduced between 30 and 40 per cent. Explaining the position, Mr. Guiniven said that because of the revaluations the council was unable to escape increasing the rates to 1/. The council had kept the rates at the lowest possible level. The majority of ratepayers would find that their ratee will not be increased, while many would in future pay less. The estimates adopted provide for a debit balance at the end of March, 1930, of £18.289, as compared with an estimated deficit of £7.")77 last year. The council hopes to collect rate arrears totalling £9000. For the coming year the rat&s are ex[vected to produce £33,700, subsidy on rates £300. licenses £339, lieavv'traffic fees £1000 and petrol tax £1000. On the expenditure side interest and sinking funds will absorb £23,700, hospital levy £2490, the difference being for general maintenance and running costs of the borough. The current year was commenced with a deficit of £22,354.
