TRAM DESIGN.
ONE COMPARTMENT. CONVERSION IN PROGRESS. j "ADVANTAGE TO EVERYONE." Mention of the fact that Auckland's trarncars are gradually being converted into one-compartment vehicles was made at tins morning's meeting of the Auckland Transport Board. The point arose when Mr. W. IT. Nagle suggested that all existing cars should he converted into single compartment cars. In reply the elm inn an, Mr. IT. G. R. Mason, explained that that was actually happening. Mr, Naglo said that he had noticed that some cars had already been converted but the number was very small. Single compartment oars, he thought, were an advantage from every point of view. They were better for passengers and better for the conductors. The chairman explained that there were many things that the board did as opportunity arose. Centre poles, for instance, had been removed from time to time, and he hoped in the near future to be able to announce that the last of them had disappeared. If tho board had been asked to remove all the poles at the same time considerable co?t would have been involved. The conversion of the cars, ho said, was being carried out in the same way as the poles had been removed, an<l he thought it was best that the matter should l>e left to the engineer, who could have the work done when the cars came to the workshops for painting or for other work. If the work was done in that way all the cars would eventually be converted without any large expense and without anyone noticing that a change was taking place. After hearing the chairman's explanation Mr. Xagle said that he was well satisfied and that he would withdraw his question.
