COUNCIL OF WOMEN.
DISCUSSION ON HOUSING. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) DUNEDIN, Saturday. The annual meeting of the Council of Women concluded to-day. Miss Kirk, of Wellington, was elected president, and Mrs. Finer, of Christ-church, was made a life member. Among the remits carried were the following:— That the Government should be urged to prohibit the importation of back-dated literature of the sex-crime type; that allowances should be granted for all children of a family, such allowances to be paid on the mother's application; that the date and hour of executions should not be made public; that the public should be excluded from courts during separation, maintenance and affiliation eases; trained women police should be appointed with the status and privileges of men police; and that no further permits for art unions should be granted. A long debate occurred on the housing question, us the result of a remit moved by the Wellington branch that the Government should be urged to investigate housing conditions. Miss E. Melville (Auckland) said the shortage of houses was brought about by years of legislation which made property ownership by private enterprise unprofitable. Miss England stressed the urgent need of- a housing scheme. For ten years now, big schemes had been carried out in England, and the St. Pancras scheme could be accepted as a model for New Zealand endeavour. On a vote being taken an amendment by Miss Melville was carried referring the matter to the branches, which wciv requested to set up a small investigation committee and report to the Dominion committee."
