LOST GROUND AT START.
C. G. Smith turned out his novice pacer Mapula in fine order for her engagement in the Mount Eden Handicap, but the bay mare failed to strike a correct gait at the start and her chances were hopeless. Once she settled down she made up a little ground, but never looked a possibility.
