FOOTBALL ASSAULT
ACTION BY POLICE. SEQUEL TO R.U. DECISION. PLAYER CONVICTED AND FINED. (By Telegraph. —Own Correspondent.) MASTERTON, this clay. At the conclusion of a senior championship match at Marthiborough some weeks ago, when the Martinborough team which was then holding the wooden spoon in the competition unexpectedly defeated Carterton, the premiership leaders, Frank Fitzgerald, captain of the Carterton team and Wairarppa representative player and captain for some years, assaulted a Martinborough player, William Holland, who is also a Wairarapa representative. The Wairarapa Rugby Union took the matter up and disqualified Fitzgerald for the rest of the season. A sequel to the assault was heard in the Magistrate's Court at Martinborough, when Fitzgerald was charged with having assaulted Holland, and was fined 30/ and costs, the magistrate taking into consideration that the Rugby Union had already punished Fitzgerald. It is understood that Fitzgerald does not intend to play football again.
