MORE POWER.
WAIKAREMOANA SCHEME.
TAWA FLAT RAILWAY NEEDS. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, this day. After several years of investigation and experiment the hydro-electric branch of the Public Works Department is taking steps to draw further upon the vast amount of water power stored in Lake Waikaremoana with the ultimate object of making available nearly four times the power which is at present being developed. It is proposed to use the water in the lake three times over for the development of electrical energy to meet the expanding needs of the North Island. An important consideration is that the electrification of the Tawa Flat railway deviation line within the next year or so will involve the use of much electrical power and other projects in sight will also augment the demand. Water power will be developed at three different levels. The purpose of the works now under way is to draw off from the lake water for a third turbine for which provision is made in the No. 2 development scheme.
