RANGER ATTACKED.

MEN FOUND WITH DUCK

STRUCK WITJI RIFLE BUTT? (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) TAUMARUNUI, this day. A brutal assault on a ranker was committed yesterday by_ two men who were suspected of shooting ducks out of season. Struck a heavy blow from behind, the ranger was unconscious for an hour. The victim of the assault was Mr. J. Box, of China, an Auckland Acclimatisation Society ranger. He was riding over some wastevland near Toitoi, about four miles from Ohura, when he heard a shot and saw a duck fly down a stream near by. On investigation ho discovered two men, one with a rifle atul the other with a duck. Mr. Box demanded the bird, whicli one man handed to him at the same time asking to see his warrant. As Mr. Box put his hand into an inside coat pocket to produce the document he was struck behind the left ear with a hard object, probably a rifle butt, by the second man, who was standing just to the side of him. When the ranger recovered consciousness later the men had disappeared. Mr. Box informed the police that the men were strangers to the district.
