ILLEGAL MILK SALES.

COUNCIL PROSECUTIONS.

A farmer, Rossmore Fraider, of Mount Roskill, and a milk vendor who purchased his milk, Gilbert Thomas Heron, of Avondale, were each fined £1 and costs in the Magistrate's Court this morning by Mr. W. R. McKean, S.M., for respectively selling and purchasing milk at a lower price than that fixed by the Auckland Metropolitan Milk Council.

Each defendant pleaded guilty, stating that the offence was due to ignorance of the regulation.

Mr. Drummond, for the council, said that the prices had been made public by advertisement and by Press reports of meetings and discussions by associations of interested persons, and that if the dairymen did not adhere strictly to the prices fixed the way was laid open for the harmful price-cutting which it was one of the main duties of the council to prevent.

The magistrate said that the attention of those concerned must be drawn to the regulations and that would be achieved in some degree by his imposing the penalties mentioned. He warned the defendants that they were liable for such an offence to a penalty up to £20.

Ridley Byan, of Williamson Avenue, Ponsonby, milk vendor, was fined 10/ and costs for having in his possession milk contained in bottles bearing the names of other vendors.

Ernest Albert Hodder, of Birkdale Road, Birkenhead, was convicted on a charge of selling milk without holding a license of any kind from the council. As the defendant had been selling only a small quantity and had since discontinued, no penalty was imposed.
