FRAUD CHARGE.

HEAVY BAIL FIXED.

SUSPECTS AGAIN REMANDED.

PROSECUTOR'S STATEMENTS

Arrested at Wellington on Saturday just prior to tho sailing of the motor vessel Wanganella for Sydney, Lawrence Edward Din, or Dean, a clerk, aged 23, and Madeline Elizabeth Din, or Dean, aged 44, domestic, appeared in the Police Court this morning, charged with conspiring by deceit to defraud the Post Office Savings Bank at Auckland of £1850. The female accused was fashionably dressed and wore a fur coat. Senior Detective S. G. Hall asked that both accused be remanded to appear on August 15. Mr. Brian Kingston, representing the. male accused, asked for bail. Accused, he s<l id, was charged under section 259 of the Crimes Act. By virtue of section 3US the accused was bailable as of right. Tho magistrate, Mr. F. K. Hunt: I will want substantial bail. Senior Detective Hall said he- had neon instructed strongly to oppose bail. '■There is every reason to believe that these two accused will attempt to abscond," he added. "If bail is granted I would ask that it should be at least £5000 in each case. It is known that money has been sent by draft to Australia under fictitious names, and that ■both accused had booked on the Wan©ganella under fictitious names."

Mr. Uren said lie appeared for the female accused. "There is some suggestion that these people have got away with certain moneys," said Mr. Uren, "but I understand that there is no money missing and that the police are holding money. I would suggest that a purely nominal bail will be sufficient under the circumstances. Conspiracy charges— persons charged with such offences—are bailable as of right. All the police have to go on at present is mere suspicion." Mr. Hunt: Nominal bail, you suggest! Mr. Uren: I do, sir. She could report to the police twice daily.

Mr. Hunt: The bail will be £2000 in each case. They were arrested under fictitious names. I want two sureties of £1000 each in each case."
