BIRDS OF NEW ZEALAND.
GRAMMAR SCHOOL HTNCHEON
A warm welcome and congratulations were extended to Mr. C. M. Littlejohn, headmaster-elect of the * Auckland Grammar School, and to Mr. K. J. Dellow, headmaster-elect of the Takapuna Grammar School, at a luncheon held by the Auckland Grammar School Old Boys' Association yesterday. The third guest of honour was Mr. J. D. Speedy, surveyor-general in British North Borneo, an old boy of the school, who is at present on furlough. About 60 members were present. Mr. R. A. Falla, ornithologist at the War Memorial Museum, entertained the gathering with a talk on the points of appeal in birds, especially the faculties of flight and song. To illustrate his words he gave faithful imitations of the songs of different species. "New Zealand, being a very young country, has not a very natural historyminded population," said Mr. Falla. "We have had too many other things to worry about. The study of natural history develops in proportion to the civilisation of a country. However, interest is steadily growing in our native bird life."
