PUBLIC THANKS.
SIR HERBERT HART.
GOOD WORK IN SAMOA.
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Tuesday. The acting-Prime Minister, Sir Alfred Ransom, stated to-day in connection with the return of Sir Herbert Hart from Samoa that his control of the territory had coincided with a period of intense economic depression, which had been especially severe in its effect upon the value of tropical products. It had largely been due to his prudent administration that the territory had been able to maintain its financial equilibrium and show a balanced Budget.
While the utmost economy had been exercised, Sir Herbert Hart had taken all possible care to ensure that the functions of administration had been carried on with complete efficiency. His period as, Administrator had been marked by the progressive diminution of political unrest and he left the territory in a satisfactory condition, both economically and politically. The Government desired to take the opportunity of publicly expressing appreciation of the value of his services.
