SENIOR RESERVE POSITION. A large crowd on JSaturday watched the second of the three matches being held to decide the third grade championship. The teams City and Ponsonby drew, 11 all, the previoue week, and Poneonby won on Saturday by 15 —12 after an even contest with the result in doubt to the bell. Interest in the senior reserves was exemplified by enthusiasm shown in the match between Richmond and City at the Domain, where the game was stopped three times owing to encroachment by spectators. City won a, fast and close encounter by 5—2 and this means that Richmond will meet for the championship honours. AFFAIRS OF REFEREES. At the meeting of the Auckland Rugby League Referees Association last evening, Mr. L. Bull presiding, Mr. W. Alincham reported the Control Board had ruled that a player leaving the field eick could not be replaced, but a player injured could be replaced. The question arose from an incident in a third grade match at Victoria Park. Mr. Saundere said the matter apparently had .been mkreported to the Control Board. An ambulance man had advised him on the field that the player who went off was suffering from concussion as well as influenza. In reply to a query as to replacements in Saturday's representative matches, Mr. Wetherill advised that special provision had been made in this direction. Arising out of a clash of colour in the match between the Glenora and Otahuhu fourths, the association reaffirmed ite decision not to take control of any more matches faced with this difficulty, members being definitely instructed "ot to act. The stand being taken, it was emphasised, was to ensure prompt consideration of the colour clash by the responsible committee appointed by the senior and junior boards. Reporting on scrums in the big matches on Saturday, the official critic, Mr. J. T. Hill, said the games could have been improved with better control at the start. The half-backs in the first game gave a wonderful display and retired as required, and the scrums were also better. Jn the second game the scrums were faulty, a clear tunnel not being maintained, and the hookers continually lifting. One halfback failed to retire throughout the game. The lifting of feet and non-retiring of halfbacks were the worst faults in the game and should be wiped out, even at the risk of missing other scrum breaches. Mr. Bull reported at length on the recent conference between the rules committee of the council and the New Zealand Referees' Association.
