FORTY-TWO INCHES.

SEVEN MONTHS' RAINFALL. JULY'S RECORD FIGURE. It is likely that the total rainfall for 1935 will prove one of the wettest for some years. With seven months now passed the total stands at 42.70 in, a figure which is more than 10in higher than that for the same period last year and greatly in excess of the totals for 1933 and 1932. The total rainfall for July, according tb the official readings made by Mr. S. M. Yallop at the Albert Park observatory, was 10.55 in, which created a new record for the month. The previous heaviest rainfall for the month was 9.50 in, registered in 1917. Taken over a period of nearly 80 years, the average rainfall for the month of July is only 4.95 in. The records of only four other months — February, 18G9 (14.15 in), May, 1920 (13.70 in), April, 1924 (11.55 in) and August, IS7O (10.56 in) —exceed that established in tho month just ended, during which rain fell on 19 days. The average annual rainfall for Auckland is 44.39 in, so that the fall for the seven months of the present year to date is less than 2in below tho full year's average. Tho rainfall for the present year to date, together with that for the corresponding period in the three previous years, is shown in the following table: —
