BIG SLIP OCCURS.

PART OF CLIFF FACE. NEAR NAPIER BREAKWATER. MONTH'S WORK IN CLEARING. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) HASTINGS, this day. Portion of the cliff face overlooking the Napier breakwater slipped down on to the road and the newly-constructed railway yards early yesterday morning. The amount of debris in the slip is estimated to be about 20,000 tons, its depth being about 20 feet in places, and its extent about 100 yards. On account of the early hour no one was in the vicinity at the time and the damage done is not ascertainable until the material which covers part of the breakwater contractors' plant is cleared away. Little other damage was done apart from the twisting of the railway linos and inconvenience caused to the working of the port. The clearing of the slip was in progress all day and night in an endeavour to have one railway line ready for work this morning.

Tl.e steamer Wainui was to have worked the pert yesterday morning, but on account of the conditions she left for Gisborne with Napier cargo still on board. She is to return to-day for discharge.

It is expected that three weeks or a month will be occupied in completely clearing the slip, but this time may -be lessened if negotiations are completed with the Public Works Department for the use of several steam navvies.
