SUPERVISOR OF TALKS. MR. A. E. MULGAN APPOINTED. PROMINENT JOTOIfAMST. Mr. Alan Mulgan, literary editor of the "Auckland Star," has been appointed to the staff of the New Zealand Broadcasting Board as supervisor of broadcasting talks. He will take up his duties about the end of September. Born at Katikati in 1881, Mr. Mulgan is the son of the late Mr. E. K. Mulgan, formerly chief inspector of schools at Auckland. His parents and grandparents came from the North of Ireland to a special settlement in the Bay of Plenty. Mr. Mulgan was educated at the Auckland Grammar School, and on leaving joined the "Auckland Star." Four years later he went to the "Press," Christchurch, as an editorial writer, but returned in 191G to the "Star," of which he has been literary editor for many years. He has been lecturer in journalism at the Auckland University College since 1924.
Mr. Mulgan's published work includes "Three Plays of New Zealand," which have been staged in the Dominion and also in Australia, two volumes of verse, "The English of the Line" and "Golden Wedding!" and "Home," his impressions of the Old Land which won high praise in England and was published recently in a popular edition, and about twelve months ago a novel, "Spur of Morning." He is well known under the pen name of "Cyrano." Mr. Mulgan has lectured before many Auckland societies, chiefly on historical and literary subjects, and his regular talks from IYA on foreign affairs have a wide audience. He has acted as cojudge of the New Zealand Journalists' Association's annual competition for the best newspaper work of the year and stands high in the regard of his fellow journalists throughout New Zealand.
