THE "REP." TRIAL DEVONPORT SHIELD CONTINUED. To-morrow the Auckland Hockey Association lias set down for competition in the senior grade the sixth and seventh I series of the Devonport Shield contest. The teams having the bye will be matched with the representative trial team. As this is the last Saturday before the Auckland match with the Indians, it is expected that, Mr. W. Newsham, the sole selector, will field practically his final selection. Followers of the game will be keenly watching the final try-outs, and players and the selector are sure to coino in for some criticism. However, Mr. Newsham, who is also one of the New Zealand selectors, has seen the visitors in action in several of their matches and should be in a position to know exactly the stylo of player necessary to curb their scoring tendencies. In the early matches, starting at 1.40 p.m., Somerviile meets Grammar Old Boys on No. 9, University and St. Luke's will play on No. 3, and Papatoetoe plays Mount Eden on No. G ground. Wesley will try conclusions with the reps, on No. 2 ground. The second series of matches for the clay commence at 3.50 p.m. and followers are sure to see an exciting game between Somerviile and St. Luke's on No. 9 ground. Wesley and Grammar Old Boys will try conclusions on No. 3, while University will play Mount Eden on No. 6 ground. The second rep. trial will be played against Papatoetoe. This weeks' matches mark the final of the Devonport Shield competition. Teams:— SOMERVILLE. Before an attendance of 4000 ' the visiting Indian hockey players yesterday defeated Taranaki by 3 goals to nil. There was no score at half-time. Taranaki played a pressing game, but lack of control precluded chances of scoring. Rup Singh (two) and WelLs were the scorers. This victory makes the twentieth in succession for the Indians since May 15, with a goal record of 248 to 12. The previous closest games were 3 —2 and 4 —2 in the second and first Tests respectively, and 5—2 against Canterbury. VENUE OF PIAKO GAME. FIXED FOR MORRINSVILLE. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday. The management committee of the New Zealand Hockey Association has decided to play the match between the Indian team and Piako representatives (on July 10) at Morrinsville instead of Te Aroha. A cablegram was received from the Australian Hockey Association eta ting that the association was unwilling to promise extra payment for the proposed Test match with the Indian team. Ii additional payment was required the association would be prepared to forgo the Test. The committee decided that the previously arranged programme must stand, 6ix matches in Australia, and that the Test be eliminated. Private advice was received in Auckland yesterday of the Piako decision, and in the remaining fixtures of the Indian lour published on Thursday the venue was ehown as Morrinsville. . N.Z.
