HUSBAND'S OFFENCE.
NOT THE USUAL TYPE,
LOSS OF WIFE BY DEATH. "This ifi not the usual type of offence of this kind. The man was in a dillicult position and yielded to his wife's requests," said Mr. Justice Fair in admitting Herbert Bonython Francis to two years' probation 011 the usual statutory conditions. The accused was brought up for sentence on a charge of supplying an instrument to his wife, knowing it was intended to be used for an unlawful purpose. ' Mr. Spence, for the accused, said that at the time of her death accused's wife was 22 years of age and had had three children. The accused had not been in permanent employment nt any time since his marriage and the niocst lie had earned was £2 10/ a week 011 relief work. When there was a prospect of a fourth child arriving the wife became desperate, and it was because of her entreaties that the accused obtained the instrument for her. "He has been terribly punished, as lie has lost bin wife, to whom he was devoted, and his little children are now motherless," said Mr. Spence. His Honor admitted accused to probation for two years.
