OPIUM ADDICT.

SICK CHINESE FINED £25. A fruiterer, Chan Fun, aged 47, was this morning, in the Police Court, fined £2") for being in possession of prepared opium.

Mr. .T. F. W. Dickson appeared for accused, who pleaded guilty.

It was stated by Senior-Detective Hall that yesterday, when Detectives Moore and Brady visited accused's house to interview him on another matter, they found an ounce of prepared opium and an opium pipe with some opium second* in it. Chan Fun told them that he bought it from a man on a coastal boat for £3. "This Chinese had £0 on him. nnd offered it to the detectives in full payment if they would let the matter drop," added Mr. Hall.

"This ninn is a drug addict who must resort to smoking opium, as la* i* suffering with consumption of both lungs." said Jlr. Diekson. "Perhaps your Worship will impose the minimum fine of £25 in these circumstances. It is really a license for him to carry on, as he is so ill."

The Chinese wns allowed one month to pay the fine, the magistrate stating that the circumstances were unusual.
