PACIFIC AFFAIRS.

ECONOMIC AND POLITICAL.

GATHERING INFORMATION.

Making his first visit to New Zealand on his way to Australia, Mr. Edward C. Carter, of the Institute of Pacific Relations, is a passenger on the Mariposa, which arrived at Auckland from Los Angeles this morning. -Ten years old this year, the institute is representative of 10 countries, Great Britain, the United States, China, Japan, Holland, Canada, Philippine Islands, New Zealand, Australia and Soviet Union. Mr. Carter said the object of the institute was to study economics and political matters as relating to the Pacific, and in the research work carried out every possible avenue was investigated in order to gather indisputable facts. Each of the 10 countries had its group members, and they would examine and discuss all information gathered and the conclusions forwarded to other groups for consideration.

"All the reliable information is made available to Governments, business men and the Press," said Mr. Carter. "What "we seek is sound and accurate knowledge, something that will ultimately influence public knowledge. Whether we accomplish anything is not for us to deckle, it is a matter of opinion, but if we do the chances are we are not credited with it, because we publish numbers of publications and something which wo may. have discovered by research work possibly will be put over from a public platform or a Government official.

"In our organisation we have bankers, professors, business men, all well versed in their particular sphere. Nearly all the international organisations have their headquarters in Brussels or Paris, and are so concerned with the European and Atlantic outlook, but the Institute of Pacific Relations confines its activities to the Pacific and works for the welfare of all those countries which are members."

Mr. Carter said that conferences had been held at Honolulu, China, Japan and Canada, and the next conference was to be held at California in August of next rear. After visiting Australia Mr. Carter will make a stay in New Zealand, when he will visit Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin.
