FARMER LOSES £400.
SALESMAN FOR SENTENCE. CONFIDENCE TRICK SUCCEEDS. The hearing of a charge of false pretences against a salesman, Alexander Wallace Copley, aged 37, was completed in the Police Court late yesterday afternoon. Copley, who was not represented by counsel, was charged with obtaining £400 from Warnet'ord Jolinstone by falsely representing that he had received information that a certain racehorse, Cad land, was a "moral" to win the Rangitikel Cup at Bulls on March (i; that a person whom he introduced to Johnstonc in the Albeit Hotel was a representative of Scott and Martindale, bookmakers, of Wellington; that the £400 was to bo placed on Ciullund; and that he (Copley) had already placed £450 on the horse with the representative of Scott and Martindale.
Senior Detective Hall prosecuted. The complainant Johnstone, said he had been induced to bet on Cadland solely because accused had won his confidence. Copley told him that he himself had bet £450 on the horse while another man named Ryan had invested £1000 on the horse's chance. Copley said that the odds would be substantial.
Accused pleaded guilty to the false pfetence charge, and was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. The charge of conspiracy was withdrawn by the police.
