LEAGUE PIONEER.

TRIBUTE TO LATE MR. CARLAW.

MEMORIAL SUGGESTED. A tribute to the memory of the late Mr. James Carlaw, pioneer of the Rugby League code, and patron of the New Zealand League in recent years, was paid at the meeting of the council last evening by the president, Mr. Cyril Snedden. After expressing sympathy with Mrs. Carlaw and relatives, including the council's secretary, Mr. W. A. Carlaw, a nephew, the chairman, as a mark of respect on behalf of the affiliated leagues of Xew Zealand, adjourned the meeting in silence for two minutes.

Mr. Snedden said they were all saddened at the loss of their honoured patron, who, with the late Mr. D. W. McLean, was one of the code's founders. Few in the history of any sport had figured so creditably as Mr. Carlaw had done in Rugby League in New Zealand. His influence would be felt in the code for all time.

At Mr. Sneddon's suggestion the conncil decided to ask the Auckland Rugby League to co-operate in tho erection of some suitable memorial, to be hung in tlie reception hall at Carlaw Park grandstand,

"to ever remind players, supporters and visitors of the notable contribution given by Mr. Carlaw to our game."
