FIXED DATE ADVOCATED. LEGISLATION SOUGHT.

Legislation to alter the Easter holiday period from a movable fixture to a definite holiday at the same time each year is to be sought by the Auckland Chamber of Commerce. At a meeting of the council of the chamber this morning it was decided to request the Associated Chambers to obtain legislation to this end. Mr. A. G. Limn said that in England legislation fixing the date of Easter had been enacted some years ago, but had never been put in practice. The only objection to the fixation of the Easter period in New Zealand came from the churches. If legislative provision wa-4 made here along English lines, it could be enforced when the English law was brought into operation, so keeping the Easter holidays uniform in Great Britain and- New Zealand. He moved that the Associated Chambers should be asked to obtain the necessary legislation, and his motion was carried. The closing of the banks on saints' days was also considered by the council. The Associated Chambers reported that the acting-Minister of Finance, the Hon. Adam Hamilton, had advised that the question of eliminating saints' days from the statutory bank holidays would, be considered when .any amendments to banking legislation were next reviewed. The Associated Chambers added that it had resolved to write again to the Minister, asking him to introduce legislation to eliminate the holidays during next session of Parliament.
