PLACE FOR RETIREMENT.

NEW ZEALAND LITTLE KNOWN.

"Retirement Is to many people a nightmare," said Sir Joseph Smith in an address on "Retiring in New Zealand." at a luncheon meeting of the Overseas League this afternoon. The Hon. John Alexander presided. Sir Joseph is himself a retired Indian civil servant.

"It is not so difficult for those with ample money, but for those who only have a limited competence (and it is quite a false Impression that retired civil servants from the East enjoy the riches of Croesus), a great deal of thought must "oe given to choosing a country in which to retire," continued Sir Joseph. "Some go back to London and live quietly in the suburbs on a very much reduced scale, compared with what they have been used to in the East; others make their homes in the counties and arc happy enough; while a few retire to the Dominions."

Sir Joseph said the charms of New Zealand should be made known in other parts of the Empire. Many educated people overseas imagined New Zealand was part of Australia. Only tho other tlay he received a letter addressed: ". . . Auckland, New Zealand, Australia." He had oven heard people discussing it as if it were a semi-barbarous country.
