WEATHER SPOILS SEVEN-A-SIDE.
(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) WHANGAREI, Monday. Although a valiant attempt was made to cany on with the Whangarei , . Rugby Union's seven-a-side tourney to-day, and a couple of games were actually staged, the weather won, and a postponement was made The grounds resembled a Japanese rice field, but all was ready for the starting ' bell when the intensity of the rain increased and there was a minor rebellion among a few of the players. With No. 1 ground flooded the referee in the fourth grade match between Hign School and Hikurangi had to keep a smart watch out in case any of the midgets became submerged in the pools, which were knee-deep in places. The boys were enjoying the mud larking, but with many of them lacking a change of dry clothing and the conditions becoming worse, it soon became apparent tnat to carry on was out of the question. It was a great pity that the weather interfered in this manner, because the stage was set which would have set a new mark for the North. With 79 teams entered, 553 players would have been taking part. The tourney will be held later in the season.
PARATA CUP. In a representative Rugby match played at Koto-ua yesterday In the Parata Cup eompoHtirm for associations affiliated to the Hay of Plenty Union. Hotorua, 27 points, defeated Kangltaiki, 14 points. The Parnta Cup competition Rugby match -between Tnuranga and To Pnke was hold at Tnuranga yesterday in lino woather and before a large attendance. It was a fast, open game which, in an exciting finish, ended in a draw, 14 all.
