LAND AT KAURI POINT.

PORTION OF DOMAIN AREA.

\ proclamation published In the Gazette states Unit section 102 Parish of Takapuna, containing .approximately 02A acres, has been set aside for defence purposes. The laind concerned is not, as might be supposed, in. the Borough of Takapuna, but is at Birkenhead, and the greater portiori. of it is contained in what is known as the Kauri Point Domain. , " ." ~ Although it is understood that tne land is to be used in connection with naval defence, the Minister "t Defence, Mr. Cobbe, said when'interviewed that he was not prepared to make any statement relatins to the proclamation. Kauri Point, which is opposite the reef at Point Chevalier, -was, with other vantage points in the harbour, originally reserved for defence purposes-under Sir George Grey's administration. With the passing of years the Kauri Point area was vested as a domain in the Mayors of Auckland and Birkenhead, and the chairman of the Auckland Harbour Board. About six years ago the area and an adjoining property including Fitzpatrick's Bay was vested in the Birkenhead Borough Councdl. as a Domain Board, which has controlled It ever since. . It was stated this morning -that the land which has been set «sdde for defence purposes j? that upon which little work has been done .'by thq Domain Board, and that it include Fitzpatrick's Bay. \
