NEW JUTLAND BRIDGE.

DANISH ENTERPRISE. A 3800 ft bridge that will span the waters of the Little Belt, between Jutland and the Danish island of Funen will serve to reduce by four hours the travelling time between Copenhagen and London. The bridge was to be opened in May to trains, motor cars, pedestrians and cyclists, and simultaneously a fast streamlined train was to enter the service on this route. The traveller from the Danish capital to' London now uses two train-ferry services before lie reaches Esbjerg, on the west coast of Jutland, where he takes ship for Harwich to board the Londonbound train. One of these ferries crosses the Grand Belt between Zealand and Funen, the other the Little Belt between Funen and Jutland. The new bridge will eliminate the latter crossing for passengers by train, and extend the touring territory of the Danish cyclist. It consists of five reinforced concrete arch spans on the Jutland side, and three on the island side, with two' shore piers and four main piers carrying . the 2080-feet steel superstructure.

The Little Belt, though narrow, is a rough stretch of water. The problem of transportation there was temporarily iolved in 1872 when the first Danish train ferry was started, but increased traffic in recent years necessitated a change. The structure now nearing completion was sanctioned in 1027 by the Danish Parliament.
