FIRMING IN POTATO PRICES. CHRISTCHURCH, Friday. Values for potatoes have been very irregular during-the week, but there has been a sharp firming, due largely to forIward operators coming on the market to cover their deliveries. As an instance of the variation in values, potatoes were sold at Lyttelton the same day at a difference of 10/ a ton. The fluctuations make definite quotations difficult, but Dakotas may be quoted at £5 17/6 a ton, fob, s.i., for prompt delivery, and up to £6 5/ for Whites. The equivalent value to farmers on these prices is £4 10/ to £4 12/6 for Dakotas and £4 10/ for Whites. Auckland inquiry has been almost entirely absent during the firming. Sales were effected earlier, in the week at higher f.0.b., s.i., values than those quoted, but the market' is now quieter, although no weaker. The Waimarino and Kartigi between them took 8500 sacks from Timaru and Lyttelton, and the Gabriella is'loading at Timaru to-day and will also lift some potatoes at Lyttelton. An estimate of her cargo is not yet There is no change in the oats market. Southern A grade Gartons are worth 3/2, f.0.b., s.i., and B's 3/. Quotations for best qualitv duns are 3/3, on trucks, and Algerians, 2/2 to 2/4. Chaff is slow of sale, the mild weather no doubt being an influence in the slack demand. Values on trucks are £3 5/ to £3 7/6 a ton. . There is no change in the market for partridge peas. So far there is no deinand for export. '-', ~ , „ Onions are still making high figures, from £12 to £12 10/ on trucks, but the quality is now uncertain, and the demand at the high price is not very keen.
