OLD BOYS' REUNION. SEVERAL FUNCTIONS HELD. The annual reunion of the Sacred Heart; College Old Boys' Association began on Saturday evening at the college with a. smoke concert. The president, Mr. George Foy, presided. Messages of good will and regret for inability to attend were received from the Rev. Fathers Colgan and Ryan, the Rev. Brother Bcniguus (New Zealand provincial for the Order), Rev. Brother Stephen (Gisborne), Mr. T. B. Guscott (president of the Wellington and from many old boys. "In introducing the toast of Alma Mater in this year which marks the 50th anniversary of the arrival of the Marist Brothers in New Zealand, one's thoughts must inevitably turn with gratitude as an old boy, with appreciation as a citizen, of the 6elf-sacrificing work which _ they have clone and are doing in our midst,' said Mr. Foy. "The past 50 years stand out as a period of uninterrupted success for the brothers in their work for Catholic education. In civic matters they have inculcated into their pupils a love of their nativo country. The brothers' influence has been felt in every sphere—in education, in sport, in citizenship and in religious endeavour. Alma Mater has taught her sons to love God and to honour their neighbour." The Rev. Brother Tareisius, replying, said that the brothers were grateful to the old boys for the manner in which they had opened an endowment fund for the Claremont Novitiate. The fund now stood at £750. The toast of kindred associations was sponsored by the Rev. Dr. L. J. Buxton, who welcomed the representatives of other secondary schools. He referred with regret to the loss being sustained by Kinp£s College in the departure of the Rev. 11. K. Archdall and by Auckland Grammar School on the retirement of Mr. H. J. D. Mahon. Replies to the toast were made- by the following:—Auckland Grammar School, Mr. J. Stevenson; King's College, Mr. B. Kingston; Mount Albert Grammar. Mr. V. Butler; Prince Albert, Dr. Frank Macky; St. Patrick's (Wellington), Mr. T. Boyce; Christian Brothers (Dunedin), Mr. J. F. McClintock; St. Bede's (Christchurch), Mr. S. Treston; Dilworth, Mr. J. Hyland.

The Rev. Brother Peter, proposing the toast of the old boys, congratulated the association on its work during the year and expressed the pleasure of the brothers on the successes of individual old boys. Since the last reunion three old boys had been raised to the dignity of the priesthood. Mr. F. Sweeney replied. An enjoyable programme was provided by Messrs. Len Barnes, Geoffrey Colledge and. Alan McElwain, with. Mr. Trevor Sparling at the piano. Mass was celebrated at the college yesterday morning, when there was another large gathering of old boys. The celebrant was Rev. Father John Bowling and an address was given by Rev. Father Victor Courtney, both old boys. A reunion luncheon followed, at which the announcement by the president, Mr. Foy, that a branch of the association was ready for opening at Hawera was greeted with applause. The annual past v. present football match resulted after an exciting game in a win for present by 11 to 6. The reunion will be brought to a close with the annual dance at Dixieland this evening.
