MANAWATU RIVER.

LOWLYING AREA FLOODED,

FOXTON HIGHWAY IMPASSABLE.

Overflowing its banks at nightfall, the Manawatu River came through a gap in protective works near Tiakitahuna and invaded a low-lying area of several thousand acres, principally in the Taoliui basin, between Tiakitahuna and Rangiotu. The waters were subsiding this morning, but at noon to-day the main highway between Foxton and Palmerston North, which has been under water in several long stretches, was still impassable at a point close to Rangiotu, where the Oroua River begins to converge on the flooded Manawatu. Practically no stock losses have occurred in this locality, settlers receiving ample warning through drains and streams overflowing. Various tracts of land in the Manawatu were invaded yesterday, but the water is receding ' to-day and the position is ranidlv returning to normal. Water which crossed the main highway to the north, two miles from the city, is now disappearing, and the Feiklinir. Awahuri and other roads are now clear.
