SWIM FOR LIFE.

FIVE CHINESE.

HEAVY LORRY DISAPPEARS,

PLUNGED INTO FLOOD WATER,

(Hy Telegraph.—Press Association.) PALJIERSTON NORTH, this day. Five Chinese who were travelling with a load of vegetables on a heavy lorry had to swim for their lives when the lorry plunged into a flooded stream yesterday on Bones' Road, which joins the Feilding-Awahuri Road. The lorry was traversing a section which was awash when it unexpectedly entered a deep hole on the edge of the racing flood waters. It turned over on its side and disappeared. After a struggle, during which they were compelled to discard their knee hoots and part of their clothes, all five managed to swim to the edge of the bank and pull themselves out. Xo sign was seen subsequently of the lorry, which was swept away into still deeper water. 'Houses in the vicinity were marooned, the water in some places being level with the top of the fences. Conditions had considerably improved in that area to-day.
