SCENES IN SYDNEY.
REMARKABLE RUSH TO POST OFFICE. NEARLY 30,000 LETTERS. SYDNEY, May 13. There were remarkable scenes at the Sydney Post Office this evening in a laet-minute rush to post letters bearing special stamps for tlie trans-Tasman air mail. People jostled one another and plied friends with all sorts of questions. It was obvious that there were scores of philatelists among the excited crowd. The postnl authorities, who have extended the closing time for the mail until 10 o'clock to-morrow nioriiinjr. state that so far it consists of 29,000 letters, including New Zealanders' and those from Australian States. The New South Wales quota comprises lli.ooo.
Sonic of the letters bore stamps of greater value than was necessary. .Some were literally smothered with stamps: worth 20/. There were other instances where rare stamps were utilised. The precaution was tatcen to register these letters.
