QUEEN STREET TRAFFIC.
RESTRICTION NECESSARY.
(To the Editor.).
After the confusion in Queen Street on the night of the King's Jubilee, I think a little discussion on the subject would do no harm. The time seems ripe now to take the tram traffic out of Queen Street on Friday evenings or any special evenings, say, from 7 p.m. to 9.30 p'.m. between Wellesley Street and Customs Street, or perhaps better still, don't let the trams into this area at any time after 7 p.m., as the tram patrons would still have the tram service at the foot, centre and top of Queen Street. This arrangement would allow of additional parking places for motor cars, as they could park crossways on the tram tracks and angleways on the sides, and aLso on sides opposite the safety zones, and peoplewould cross from one side of the street to the other at the ordinary street intersections. The position in Queen Street has got to be tackled, and it would be unfair to force the cars out where they would be compelled to park a quarter or half a mile or more away from the shopping centre, which would mean families having to walk this distance to the shopping area to do their shopping and return carrying their purchases up the hills, and in some ca-ses, poorly-lighted streets, whereas taking the trams out would cause little or no inconvenience to amfme. The present system of parking in Queen .Street is very unsatisfactory. A car is left with ample room to work out when required, but when the owner returns he finds a car in front parked within a foot of his car, and another one- within a foot of his car at the back, and he simply has to wait until one or the other car is removed before lie can go home, which may mean an hour or more. The parking in the centre of the street would liave to be on a slight angle to allow of easy backing out, and a fair distance either side of cross-streets would have to be kept clear to allow of a good view being obtained for cross traffic. I am making these suggestions with a view to laying a foundation for further discission of the matter. PROGRESS.
