SHORTAGE OF ORANGES.

The supply of oranges is short at present, but will be supplemented by a shipment from the Cook Islands by the Waipahi early next week. This will be tho first direct shipment from the Cook Islands to Auckland this season, and although the quantity available is smaller than was anticipated, it is expected to be one of the largest of the season, the crop of oranges in the Cook Group being small owing to the damage wrought by the recent hurricane. Although they were landed from the Aorangi yesterday in good condition, Fiji mandarins are not meeting with a very keen demand. There was a good demand at to-day's sales for cooking and dessert apples and for pears, while tomatoes also sold freely. The supply ot outdoor tomatoes is now rapidly diminishing and hothouse tomatoes are taking their place. Hothouse Colman grapes, which have sold fairly well throughout the season, are also meeting with a fair demand. High prices are beina received for passio-i fruit, of which the supply is short. The supply of persimmons i« practically finished' for the- season. Tree tomatoes are dull of sale, the quality of many lines being very poor.

Mandarins: Fiji, repacks, 10/. Grape fruit: Californian, 30/. Tomatoes: Hothouse, 5d to OHd per lb; outdoor, extra choice, 8/ to 9/ per case; others, 2/ up. Bananas: 15/ to 18/. Tree tomatoes: Black. 3/0 to 4/0; others, 2/ np. Pines: Queensland. 13/ to 22/. according to count. Grapes: Hothouse. Column, extra choice, 1/3 to 1/5 per lb; others, Oil to 1/2. The supply of vegetables is fairly heavy and many lines are going cheaply, especially lettuce and carrots. There is a glut of kumarne. Cabbages ensod slightly mi price at to-day's sales, but cauliflower, most of which are coming from Ohakune. realised high prices, the quality being particularly good. Brussels sprouts are also arriving from Ohakune. Supplies of green peas and beans are diminishing, and some hothouse beans arc now on the market.
