POLLARD MARKET FIRM

There is a shortage of local pollard at the present time, but limited supplies have been released from the South since the price was raised 5/ a ton, and fair quantities of Australian arc still available. The market tone, however, is (inn, for there is a strong demand, and Australian quotations have advanced to a point where merchants are chary about making heavy commitments. It is not considered likely thai heavy stocks are held ill the South. Bran i.s selling steadily at late rates.

The market for oats and also for chaff is very firm, but no .alteration has boon made ill local quotations, as merchants are fairly well covered by forward puchases.

Wheat is very (irmly held in the South, but here again the local position is iinaliercd, and thore is steady business at 5/0 to 5/10 per bushel. The position in regard to maize is changing as a result of the arrivals of sampled of new season's crop from the Bay of Plenty. These are available at about 3d betow the cost of the old season'*, which is selling at 4/0' per misliei through .store. The samples referred to are of excellent quality, but scarcely matured enough to be kept in store, and no substantial quantities have yet arrived in the city.

Australian barley continues very firm, and the prices asked are restricting business.

Last week's arrivals of potatoes from the Souls were very heavy, but this week's shipment has been delayed till Friday, thus enabling merchants to unload surplus stocks without disturbing the market. There is a variation in current quotations due to difference in quality. .Satisfactory lines are worth from £8 5/ to £8 10/," through store. Onions are still scarce, and values of Pukekohe have advanced further, being now quoted at 15/ per cwt. through store. Earliest arrivals from outside the Dominion are. not expected till August, when a consignment from Japan is expected. Business in next season's Canadians is now being finalised. These will arrive at higher landed cost than last year. They will be due in October and November, nnd will sell at about 16/6 per 1001b bag, ex the wharf.
