NEW PLYMOUTH, this day.
When disturbed in the home of Mr. C. H. Burgess, five miles from New Plymouth, yesterday afternoon, two men who had made preparation in the manner of the best thriller, escaped into the bush which surrounds the house, and although the police and others combed the neighbourhood for several hours no trace of the marauders was found.
The intruders were first seen in the scullery by Mr. Frank Heal, chauffeur. When they saw Mr. Heal they left through the front door, which they had left open in case of emergency.
Another employee at the home, Mr. jjj. Lane, rushed to the front of the house, but the men had left. They leaped two or three low hedges, narrowly missed a glasshouse, the top of which is almost at ground level, and disappeared into the bush. Messrs. Heal and Lane trailed them for some distance, but eVentually lost all trace, and Mr. Heal returned to the house to telephone the police. When four rings failed to secure connection with the exchange he suspected that the wires had been cut, and he found that the fuse had been removed, thus breaking the connection.
Entrance to the house had gained by breaking glass in the bathroom window and unfastening the catch. Owincr to the absencc of the owners it is jiot yet known if anything lias been taken.
