REPORT OX YEAR'S WORK

Parents' representatives on the Kowhai Intermediate School Committee were elected last niglit at a meeting of parents held at the school. The Mayor of Mount Albert, Mr. R. Fcrner, presided. The year's activities were outlined by the headmaster, Mr. J. F. Wells, who said that at the beginning of the year the roll stood at 843. The school had recovered the grade it had lost in 1934, when the roll number had dropped from 851 in 1933 to 800. Of a total of 373 candidates for proficiency 320 had passed the actual proficiency examination, 29 had been awarded the competency certificate, and 18 had failed. That represented 87 per cent of successful candidates. Last year the percentage had been 78, in 1933 85, in 1932 71, and in 1031 (iS. The headmaster stressed the fact that if 100 per cent of passes had been sought those candidates who might have failed would not have sat, but the school had taken the view that it was better to have 87 per cent passes, with a chance for all.

In sport the school had been successful. The cricket team had won the Karle Cup, and the swimming team the champion of champions event for the schools of Auckland.

The following resolution was passed: "That this meeting is of the opinion that the third year at the school is very essential, and trusts that the Minister of Education will see his way clear to reinstate the third year for all pupils desirous of remaining." It was decided to send a copy of the resolution to the Minister of Education.
